Interview with Mr. M

"When I think about my child’s future, the most important thing to me is that he can live in Japan like a Japanese person—respecting the rules, adapting to society, and being able to live independently. At home we mostly speak Chinese, so his first language has actually become Chinese. In fact, his Japanese isn’t as strong yet, though I know that will change as he grows and studies here.

Looking further ahead, I don’t want to limit his options to Japan alone. I hope he can move freely between China and Japan, choosing the path that suits him best. We often bring him back to China, and deep down I really hope China will continue to grow stronger and more prosperous. If our country is powerful, then overseas Chinese like us can also stand straighter, with more dignity.

Of course, I know China still has its policy challenges and imperfections—sometimes things don’t go the way we hope. But in the end, I want to leave the choice to him. If he finds Japan more fitting for his life, then let him stay here. If he feels drawn back to China, that’s fine too. What matters most is that he has both doors open."
